In this 'But Why' episode - originally released in June 2016 - we look at how to talk to kids about violence in the news.

When there's mass violence in the news, it can be really hard to know how to speak to your children about what is going on. But Why spoke with a child psychologist about how to approach these difficult conversations with kids.

Dr. Robin Gurwitch is a child psychologist at the Duke University Medical Center, and she has served on numerous commissions and committees about children and trauma, including the National Advisory Committee on Children and Disasters.

We first released this episode in 2016 following the shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history in Las Vegas in 2017, we re-released this special episode for parents.
