This Jan. 30, 1986 file photo shows state Sen. Bill Doyle, left, after the vote passed to raise Vermont's legal drinking age to 21. Doyle was first elected to the Vermont Senate in 1968 and re-elected 23 times, but lost his re-election bid this November.

In November of 1968, Johnson State political science professor Bill Doyle was first elected to the Vermont Senate from Washington County. After that first victory, Doyle was re-elected 23 times.

With this political career spanning 48 years, Doyle holds the distinction of being the longest-serving senator in Vermont history.

But this past November, Doyle lost his bid for re-election, coming in fourth place in a three-member Senate district.

Doyle recently spoke to Vermont Edition about his legislative career, including why he decided to enter the world of elective politics, his experience campaigning and the history behind his Town Meeting Day survey.
