This Wednesday, June 29, the Lamoille County Sheriff's Department is hosting a community discussion on opiate addiction and its effects on families.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Vermont Eric Miller will be the guest speaker and Sheriff Roger Marcoux will facilitate the discussion.
"This is open to anyone in the community whose family or friends have been touched by the opiate epidemic in the Lamoille County Community," a department press release states. It says the purpose of the meeting is "to hear from the public their concerns, and to encourage people to reach out for help and not suffer the heartbreak addiction brings alone."
Sheriff Marcoux says his Lamoille County deputies now carry Naloxone, a drug that can be used to reverse opioid overdoses. He says his department was trained to use Naloxone on June 15, and used the drug to reverse an overdose in Johnson just 12 days later, on June 27.
In addition to the sheriff's department, the press release states other Lamoille County community partners are expected to be in attendance "to discuss resources available to help families through this public health crisis."
The community meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on June 29 at the Green Mountain Technology and Career Center, in Hyde Park.
Update 3:25 p.m. This post has been updated to reflect the fact that Lamoille County Sheriff deputies have been trained to use Naloxone and used it during an emergency call the morning of June 27.
