Two Weston institutions are celebrating big anniversaries this month and the community plans to throw them a birthday party on Saturday, June 18. The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company is commemorating its 80th year and the Vermont Country Store is turning 70.
The celebration starts at 11 a.m. with a Birthday Bash parade. Anticipated dignitaries include Sen. Patrick Leahy, longtime Weston Company Member Sam Lloyd and Vermont Country Store proprietor Lyman Orton. There will also be community floats, antique tractors and classic cars, and local kids will be decorating their bikes and riding along.
At noon, Weston’s Young Company will lead a chorus of “Happy Birthday,” followed by free birthday cake and ice cream, donated by King Arthur Flour and Wilcox Dairy.
The afternoon's activities include a scavenger hunt, face painting, lawn games and more. There will be live music on the Village Green, including the Blue Flames steel band, bluegrass trio The Merry Pranksters and folk duo Hungrytown. The Young Company will also perform a preview of the show SchoolHouse Rock Live!, which opens at the Weston Playhouse June 23.
A 7:30 p.m. there will be a Weston Playhouse Theatre Company Alumni Performance and Playhouse Party. The event is free but seating is limited. Seats can be reserved at the Box Office, (802) 824-5288. The performance will be followed at 9:30 p.m. by an Open Mic in the Cabaret.
