Twelve members of the Algonquin communities around Val-d'or, a mining town in Western Quebec, have brought forth allegations of abuse by local police.

Late last month in Quebec, shocking allegations of police abuse against indigenous people came to light.

Twelve First Nations people from the area, mostly women, say they were sexually assaulted by police or given money or drugs in exchange for sex acts.

That's put a spotlight on the Algonquin communities around the small mining city of Val d’Or, in the northwestern part of the province.

Reporter Christopher Curtis has been covering this story for the Montreal Gazette. Curtis discussed the latest on the allegations and what’s next for the community.
