Summer School: How To Tune A Piano

STEVE MORSE
Tom McNeil tunes the piano for a performance at the Adamant Music School.

Many people inherit an old piano that ends up gathering dust in the corner of the living room. It's the job of a piano tuner to get under the lid to take care of such a complex and sensitive instrument.

On this week's Summer School, we learn how to tune a piano. Tom McNeil has been tuning and maintaining pianos for nearly half a century, and has more than 20 years of experience caring for pianos at the Adamant Music School. Although he can tune by ear, he describes the tuning process for pianists of all skill levels.
