Saturday, May 2 will be Vermont's 45th Green Up Day. The annual day of statewide sprucing up is sponsored by the nonprofit Green Up Vermont, and for the first time this year you can make a donation to that effort on your state tax return.Green Up Vermont is the fourth statewide nonprofit to appear on the state income tax return. The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Nongame Wildlife Fund, Vermont Children's Trust Foundation and Vermont Veterans' Fund also appear on the form, allowing residents to give a portion of their tax refund to the charities. If taxes are owed, Vermonters can make a donation to the organizations as an add-on to their total taxes due.
If you've already filed your taxes, you can also make a contribution directly to any of the listed organizations.
Green Up Day, Vermont's annual campaign to pick up trash along roadways and in public places, began as a response to the litter revealed after the spring thaw. This year's Green Up Day will be held the first Saturday in May.
