Rutland High School took top honors at a New England cheerleading championship this past weekend in Lawrence, Mass. – beating out 14 other schools to do it.
The 23 members of Rutland High School’s varsity cheerleading squad combined gymnastic-style tumbling, high energy cheering, complicated dance moves and daring acrobatics to cinch the New England Interscholastic Spirit Championship Saturday.
A video posted on Peak Performance All Star Dance's Facebook page captured their first place performance.
Rutland High Principal Bill Olsen describes the cheerleaders as amazingly talented and dedicated. “They put a lot of hard work into it and you can see from the video that it’s very complicated. There’s a lot of athleticism and they’ve been practicing for months for this,” he said.
Olsen added that it’s wonderful to see a group of students who are typically cheering for other teams do so well when competing on their own.
Before winning the New England championship, Rutland’s coed squad won the state cheerleading title and for the first time in the school’s history, competed for the national cheering title in Dallas, Texas in January.
