Mark Larson, shown here in January 2014, is leaving his position as Comissioner of Vermont Health Access. Larson was in charge of oversight of Vermont's health care exchange until the system was taken offline for repairs in September of last year.

Mark Larson, the commissioner of Vermont Health Access formerly in control of the development of Vermont Health Connect, is leaving the job, according to a release from Gov. Peter Shumlin's office.

Larson was in charge of oversight of the state's health care exchange from its inception until September of last year, when the exchange was taken offline for repairs.

The rollout of the health care exchange was troubled, and the system had constant problems and shortfalls throughout its first year. When Shumlin took control of the exchange from Larson's department, he thanked him for his work and made a point to mention that he would remain in the job "to run [the Department of Vermont Health Access] and the many other programs and responsibilities that remain under DVHA’s responsibility."

Larson is stepping down from that role in March, according to Shumlin's office, to be replaced by Deputy Commissioner Lori Collins until a permanent replacement is selected.
