Waterbury-based Keurig Green Mountain is recalling millions of home brewing machines from stores in the U.S. and Canada due to a potential safety hazard.
The company says in some cases Keurig MINI Plus Brewing Systems have overheated and sprayed hot water on users.
Keurig has received about 200 reports of machine malfunctions. In 90 instances there were reports of burn-related injuries.
The voluntary recall affects 7.2 million machines.
Keurig says those who own one of the machines should contact them to receive a free repair kit to fix the problem.
MINI Plus owners can call the company at (844) 255-7886 or email keurig@inmar.com.
According to the company, users can continue to use the brewers but should “avoid brewing more than two cups in rapid succession, and maintain an arm’s length distance from the brewer during the brewing process.”
The machines were produced between December 2009 and July 2014. A list of serial numbers of units manufactured between those dates is available online at the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Division website.
Keurig says the problem does not affect any other brewer models.
