This weekend in Burlington, the 8th annual Laura’s March, will be held. It's a 5K fundraiser to support victims of sexual violence and to raise awareness of the issue. The event was created to honor Laura Kate Winterbottom, who was kidnapped, assaulted and murdered in March of 2005.
Winterbottom’s death was a disturbing crime and since then her family has worked to keep her memory alive while preventing sexual assault.
Many sororities from the University of Vermont have participated in Laura’s March over the years. But this year, two fraternities will also be participating, as well as members of another campus group called “One in Four.” That group is focused on raising awareness among men about the problems of sexual assault.
Alexander Morgart, a leader of “One in Four” and a junior at the University of Vermont, spoke with Vermont Edition about the work his group does and why they're participating in the March.
