Burlington Boys & Girls Club Gets Record Gift

The Boys & Girls Club in Burlington received its largest philanthropic donation ever on Monday when prominent developer Tony Pomerleau gave a $1 million unrestricted gift.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger and Vermont Secretary of Education Rebecca Holcombe were on hand for the announcement of the gift, which will be distributed over a 10-year period.

“Today marked the first annual Pomerleau Scholarship Awards that were awarded to seven Boys & Girls Club Early Promise Program participants who are going to college this fall,” the club said in a press release.

The club’s executive director, Mary Alice McKenzie, said the donation “builds the  foundation we need to continue our work” and gives additional resources for the Boys & Girls Club to help put kids through college.

Taylor was VPR's digital reporter from 2013 until 2017. After growing up in Vermont, he graduated with at BA in Journalism from Northeastern University in 2013.
