In 2005, Greg Carpenter was looking to develop a game for his physical education students. He recalled a quote from Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac that read, “When school children vote on a state bird, flower or tree, they are not making a decision: they are merely ratifying history.”
That led him to create a game using state symbols. These symbols became an obsession of his and eventually became the book he has written and published. The second edition of What Makes Vermont Special is now available.
Carpenter, who teaches physical education to grades three through six at the Swanton Central School, spoke with Vermont Edition about the book.
