Voters in Waterbury will have one last chance tonight to take in information prior to a vote to rescind a $2.95 million bond vote for a new municipal building complex. The bond vote passed on Town Meeting Day, but a petition to rescind was filed with the town. The rescission vote will be held on Tuesday. A final pre-vote public hearing will be held at 6:30 tonight at Thatcher Brook Primary School.
Waterbury's town offices were destroyed during Tropical Storm Irene and the town was awarded a $1 million disaster recovery block grant to rebuild. Nearly a year ago voters struck down a proposal to build a new municipal complex on property that was part of the old state office complex. That $5 million project would have included municipal offices, village police, the Waterbury Public Library and the Waterbury Historical Society.
The new project was scaled back and did not include the police department. In addition, the site was moved to a town-owned lot on North Main Street that is out of the flood plain. However, opponents of the project say it is still too expensive.
The rescission vote will be by Australian ballot on Tuesday, May 13, at St. Leo’s Hall behind St. Andrew’s Catholic Church 109 S. Main Street.
