The Bennington Museum focuses on the history and heritage of the southern Vermont region. It boasts the world's largest collection of Grandma Moses paintings, as well as the largest collection of 19th century Bennington pottery.
The museum has been on an extended winter break to redesign some of its galleries, and is reopening this weekend with a free Community Day on Saturday.
Dr. Robert Wolterstorff took over as Executive Dirctor in the summer of 2012 and he says that his goal is to tell the complete history of creativity and art in Vermont. He says the galleries have been re-designed to better enhance the visitor's experience, and the Grandma Moses gallery now has a few new additions on loan. A new exhibit also focuses on other 'self-taught' artists such as Grandma Moses.
Wolterstorff says he was surprised to discover a 20th century "abstract movement" in the Bennington area, which inspired him to create a new gallery called "Bennington Modernism."
