A former Vermont State Police sergeant who pleaded guilty to padding his timesheets has started to pay back the more than $200,000 he owes the state.
The state received a check for about $4,700 over the summer from Jim Deeghan, who is serving a two-year prison sentence.
Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan tells the Burlington Free Press the rest of the money will come from his state police pension over the next six years.
The 50-year-old Deeghan and his family still receive health and dental benefits.
Meanwhile, the Deeghans' home in Colchester has been sold for $365,000. While his case was pending, Donovan has filed a lien notice on the property to collect the proceeds.
