Gov. Peter Shumlin says he’s open to discussions about legalizing marijuana for recreational use, but he's happy to let Colorado and the state of Washington lead the nation on the issue.
Shumlin made the comments Tuesday after being asked about a decision by the U.S. Department of Justice not to interfere with the two western states making legal the recreational use of marijuana.
He says he applauds that decision and he's open to a further discussion in Vermont "about what makes the most sense for this state."
On July 1, Vermont decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana.
Shumlin says he's glad Colorado and Washington went first, adding that Vermont can "learn from their example."
