The Vermont Agency of Transportation will install centerline rumble strips on Route 2 between Alburgh and Colchester to cut down on crashes.
The agency says the strips — which alert drivers if they are crossing into the oncoming lane — will be added as part of a paving project.
So far, the strips are in use on 80 miles of Vermont highways. The agency plans to install another 50 miles of them in other parts of the state, including nearly 13 miles on Route 4 between Woodstock and Bridgewater.
Officials say the strips have resulted in an average of 18 percent fewer crashes where they’ve been installed. Highway Safety and Design Program Manager Ken Robie also says they are preventing crashes that mostly likely lead to fatalities.
