Victory Residents Fight Large Tax Increase

Residents in the tiny town of Victory are rebelling against what a town official says is the largest property tax increase in the state.

More than a quarter of the Northeast Kingdom town of fewer than 100 people turned out at the town offices recently to protest the tax increase that caused some taxes to more than double.

The Caledonian Record reports the increase was caused by plans to build a new town clerk's office and community meeting room as well as a spike in school costs.

Resident Carol Easter says she doesn't know where she's going to get the $3,400 for her taxes. Last year her taxes were around $1,600.

Town officials are checking to see if they can rescind spending plans approved in March.
