Thomas Crowley, a long-time Vermont state senator, assistant judge and member of a police advisory committee has died at the age of 77.
Crowley's family says he died Saturday after he decided not to seek treatment for complications following surgery for a broken hip.
Crowley is being remembered as a charismatic statesman who served 24 years in the Senate and publicly battled an alcohol problem before becoming an assistant judge and State Police Advisory Committee member.
Gov. Peter Shumlin says Crowley was a legend around the Statehouse for his sense of humor and his determination to use his public service to solve real problems for Vermonters.
