Opera Company Of Middlebury Celebrates 10 Years

Max Kraus
2008 Production Of La Boheme

The Opera Company of Middlebury is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a benefit concert Saturday, August 17th.

The recital will feature Tenor Yonghoon Lee, who sang in the company’s first two productions, and recently made his Metropolitan Opera debut.

The Company also played a significant role in the restoration of Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater.

Executive Director Doug Anderson says that it's been a challenge running an opera company during a recession.

But he also feels that the intimacy of the Town Hall Theater, along with the enthusiasm of local audiences, has contributed to the company's success.

VPR's Neal Charnoff speaks with Anderson about the history of the Opera Company of Middlebury, and the return of Yonghoon Lee, who is now an international star.

Neal was a reporter and VPR's All Things Considered host from 2001 to 2014. He joined VPR in 1996, hosting VPR's jazz programming, including live performances from the VPR studios and the Discover Jazz Festival. Prior to VPR, Neal was a programmer and host for WNCS in Montpelier and WDEV in Waterbury. He holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College.
