Health Dept. Says EEE Found In Addison County

Vermont health officials say Eastern Equine Encephalitis, known as EEE, has been found in a mosquito pool in the town of Whiting. It’s the first time the disease has been detected this season.

West Nile virus was found in the same area in early July.

Both viruses spread to humans and some animals through mosquito bites. So far this year, no animal or human cases have been reported.

EEE was first detected in mosquitoes last year, and two people died after becoming infected. Health officials say that it has only been detected in southern Addison and northern Rutland county, but is likely present in other parts of the state.

Health Commissioner Doctor Harry Chen says EEE is a serious disease, but the risk of infection is low. Still the department is urging people to take precaution like wearing long pants and using insect repellents when mosquitoes are active.
