Vt. National Guard Furloughs Will End Early

The Vermont National Guard says furloughs without pay for about 500 employees will be ending earlier than originally anticipated.

The Vermont guard says its employees will have furlough days reduced by the Department of Defense from 11 to six.

Officials in Washington say the Pentagon found sufficient savings to lessen the furlough burden on those who have had to take one day off a week without pay since early July.

Vermont Guard spokesman Capt. Christopher Gookin said Tuesday that the affected employees in Vermont have taken five furlough days and will have to take one more.

Vermont Adjutant Gen. Steven Cray says he's proud of the Vermont technicians and their families who persevered through the furlough while maintaining their professionalism and focus.
