Voices In The News: Friday, July 26, 2013

The EPA approved the state’s clean water program, Strolling of the Heifers agreed to buy Brattleboro’s River Garden, Congressman Welch called for Veterans to have better medical record access, state revenue forecasts are recovering slowly and Green Mountain Power was ordered to cut wind output as power demands peaked.

These were some of the voices in the news this week.

EPA Approves State Clean Water Programs, 7/23/13:

(Christopher Kilian, Conservation Law Foundation’s Vermont director) “The concern is that our state law basically makes compliance with the Clean Water Act contingent on state and federal money being provided. And EPA made it clear that that is a straightforward and clear violation of the Clean Water Act.”

Strolling Of The Heifers Founders To Buy Brattleboro River Garden, 7/23/13:

(Orly Munzing , founder of the Strolling of the Heifers) “We have the infrastructure and the logistics to create events here that will support the community and provide some income. We want to have a lot of farm to plate dinners here. I also want to really promote the food producers of Vermont.”

Welch Says Veterans Need Better Access To Health Records, 7/22/13:

(Congressman Peter Welch) “The kind of hassles this has created for our veterans trying to get the medical attention that they need, trying to have an adjudication of their disability benefits basically trying to get good care is brutal and it’s also unconscionable.”

Report: Too Many Workplace Injuries, 7/24/13:

(State Auditor Doug Hoffer) “State government’s most important asset is its workers, and they deserve a safe workplace. In addition, taxpayers have a right to expect the state to make the investments necessary to reduce workforce injuries and related costs.”

As Power Use Peaked, GMP Ordered To Cut Lowell Wind Output, 7/24/13:

(David Blittersdorf, a wind energy developer) “They had coal plants going; they got everything going. They were running peaking oil units, some of the most costly, polluting things to do, and then they’re curtailing some wind? It’s kind of crazy.”
