The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is reminding hunters they have until the end of next week to apply for moose hunting permits for the fall season.
The deadline to apply for a permit is July 5.
Officials say about 6,100 people have applied so far for 355 permits to be issued for this year's Oct. 19-24 regular moose hunting season. An additional 50 permits will be issued for the Oct. 1-7 archery moose season.
The number of moose permits being issued this year is down from a peak of 1,255 in 2008.
The department had worked to reduce the size of the moose herd because biologists felt there were too many.
Last year moose hunters took 222 moose.
