Bennington, Rutland Town Consider School Budgets... Again

Voters in Bennington and Rutland Town head to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots for or against proposed school budgets. In Bennington this is the third time since March that an FY14 budget has been brought before the voters. It's the fourth time for school officials in Rutland Town. Fiscal Year 2014 budgets go into effect July 1.

The Bennington Banner reports the current budget proposal is $1 million less than the budget proposed on Town Meeting Day, but it's still significantly higher than current spending.

Voters will be deciding on proposed spending set at $12.486 million, an increase of approximately 9.92 percent over current spending. The amount represents an increase in property taxes of $54.30 on a $100,000 home before any income sensitivity prebate.

Rutland Town officials are asking voters to approve a $7,845,300 budget. That represents a 2.25 percent increase over current spending. However the proposed budget is $128,700 lower than the last budget brought before the voters on May 14.

Bennington voters can cast their ballots at the River Street firehouse.

Rutland Town voters who reside  east of Route 7 vote at the Rutland Town School on Post Road, while residents west of Route 7 vote at the Town Hall on Route 4.
