Vermont State Police have arrested a relative in the beating and stabbing of a farm worker in Whiting.
Police said 30-year-old Efrain Jimez DelaCruze arrived at a hospital emergency room in Middlebury on Thursday. He said he was asleep when two men hit him with metal pipes and stabbed him with a knife.
There was no robbery, and state police said they believed the incident was directed only at DelaCruze, who was treated for multiple cuts and stab wounds.
A distant relative, 20-year-old Ricardo Romero-DeLaCruz of Cardenas, Tabasco, Mexico, was being arraigned Monday on aggravated assault and burglary charges. Police had been looking for him at local farms; he turned himself in and was arrested Saturday.
Police say they are still looking for the second suspect.
