The owner of an art gallery and tourist destination for dog lovers has passed away. Gwen Huneck, the widow of folk artist Stephen Huneck, was found dead at her St. Johnsbury home on Sunday. Police are not releasing the details but do not suspect foul play.
Dog Mountain, in East St. Johnsbury, is an art studio complex that includes a chapel where many mourn the loss of their pets.
After the founder, Steve Huneck, took his life in 2010, his wife Gwen worked to keep the business afloat, despite the threat of a tax sale. She had been working with Catamount Arts, a local non-profit, to open a new exhibition space for her late husband’s work.
An online newsletter emailed to Dog Mountain supporters reports that, quote, “Gwen never got over the loss of Stephen and missed him terribly every day…this is a great, great loss and she will be sorely missed.”
Condolences are streaming in on that website from all over the world.
Gwen Huneck would have turned 62 this month.
