Dr. Robert Shapiro, a neurologist at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, is one of the foremost researchers on the causes and symptoms of migraine. He and a team of other doctors from around the country recently discovered a gene that can make people susceptible to migraines when it mutates.
The research was conducted on two families, one in Vermont. Dr. Shapiro hopes the discovery will spur new efforts to treat and cure migraine. The research was published this month in the journal Science Translational Medicine. Shapiro spoke with Vermont Edition about what the gene does, and how this research could lead to better migraine therapy.
