Forest Service To Use 'Prescribed Burns'

The U.S. Forest Service says officials will work with local fire departments in Vermont to set fires in portions of the Green Mountain National Forest, as a management tool.

The use of what's called "prescribed fire" should help reduce accumulations of brush, restore wildlife habitat, regenerate some growth and improve the condition of the watershed.

The fires are not expected to affect local residents, but smoke will be visible from surrounding areas.

The timing of the burns will depend on weather and conditions on the ground.

The Forest Service will announce details on the locations selected for burning closer to the date the fires are being planned.
