Michael Arnowitt Plays Beethoven

Jim Lowe
Vermont pianist Michael Arnowitt will be perfoming Beethoven's last three sonatas on Sunday, Feb. 8 in Montpelier as part of Capital City Concerts.

Vermont pianist Michael Arnowitt has been performing the sonatas of Beethoven, matching his age to Beethoven's when the sonatas were composed. After 26 years, the series culminates this week with the last three sonatas, which Michael will play Sunday afternoon and evening in Montpelier as part of Capital City Concerts. He visits the VPR Performance Studio Friday for a preview.

Michael says, “These last sonatas Beethoven wrote near the end of his life are appreciated as perhaps the finest, most spiritual and transcendent pieces of solo piano music of all time, yet to hear live a concert of these final three sonatas is surprisingly rare.”

Broadcast Friday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m.

After graduate studies in musicology at New York University, Walter began his radio career at WNCN in New York. He joined Vermont Public in 1984.
