Young Writers Project: Who Will You Be?

Courtesy, Susan Reid
Maisie Newbury, 15, of Weybridge, writes about finding purpose in life and about not giving up or feeling sorry for ourselves when times get tough.

Let's sit down on a mountaintop

And take in all the people.

Let's look down and smile

Upon our fantastic equals

Going about their everyday lives

Through pain that's unimaginable.

Yet we refuse to open our eyes.

See, in this wonderful, wonderful life

It's hard to know if we matter at all,

If being a good person is really important.

We all get stuck thinking we're small

And that we're much too insignificant.

We think that our very existence

Is much too tiny to make a difference.

But that's where we're wrong.

See, we can stay in the corner;

We can cry about all of the ways

That we're broken and falling apart

Or we can pick up all the broken pieces

And build ourselves brand new hearts

Because shattered glass is beautiful

And makes breathtaking works of art.

You can speak up for the voices

That have never been heard.

You can meld people's minds

Using only your words,

Or you can run from your problems

And neglect everything you know,

Everything you feel down in your soul.

You can push down what you feel inside

And you can dig yourself deep in a hole,

Try to replace what's missing with pride

But you'll never get where you need to go.

These are the choices we make every day,

Every hour, every minute, every second.

Though you've been hurt and you still may ache,

Though you've been cut and nearly bled dry,

The biggest mistake you could possibly make

Is the choice not to try.

Just like everyone who came before you

And the others that are yet to come

And those who you will teach it to,

And those you learned it from.

Everyone who stands behind you,

Everyone who's ever cared,

The best friends you could ever ask for.

These are the voices in your head,

The ones you simply can't ignore.

They kept climbing when the slope got steep.

They kept their eyes open in their sleep.

They never lost faith in hope and in dreams.

They never gave up

Though they were tearing at the seams.

See you've got yourself a strength and a purpose.

You've got a reason to be.

You've got a fire inside your heart.

You've got everything you need.

You just have to make the choice

About your impact on the world.

Will you fight or will you flee?

Will you break or will you be?

Because I don't know if you've heard or not

But we're all standing in the dark.

But the thing that's really crucial

Is that some us are looking at the stars.
