We're taking another oppotunity to share the "Vermont Edition" conversation with Joseph Mazur, author of "Fluke: The Math & Science of Coincidence."

Returning from the holiday weekend, we'll be again sharing two memorable Vermont Edition pieces from this spring – one dealing with coincidences and the other about recycling containers.

The Odds Of That Happening

Everybody seems to have a favorite story of an amazing coincidence. But how likely are these seemingly random events?

Joseph Mazur is professor emeritus of mathematics at Marlboro College and author of Fluke: The Math & Myth of Coincidence. Back in April, Mazur talked to VPR's Jane Lindholm on the program about his book and the odds related to coincidences occurring, as well as the distinctions between coincidences, flukes and serendipity.

In addition, we heard various listener-submitted stories of their experiences with coincidences.

"The Art of Recycling"

This spring, the errand of dropping off recycling got a lot prettier if you go to a transfer station in Chittenden County.

In March, VPR's Jane Lindholm spoke with Jonny Finity of the Chittenden Solid Waste District and artist Mary Lacy to learn about "The Art of Recycling" project that beautified big metal recycling containers.

Broadcast Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016 at noon and 7 p.m.
