Battling Over Speech On Campus

Mark Schierbecker

A frame from a video taken in November at the University of Missouri shows photographer Tim Tai in a confrontation with student protestors and Janna Basler, who works at the University's office of Greek life.

Across the country, colleges and universities are being rocked by divisive debates over speech on campus. Race, protest, safe space, triggers, and much more. At stake are fundamental issues of justice, the purpose of an education and how we can listen to each other and coexist in a free society. We're diving into the debates and talking about how campuses can move forward.

We're talking to Traci Griffith, chair of the department of Media Studies, Journalism & Digital Arts at St. Michael's College, where she teaches a special course on gender, race, ethnicity and sexuality in Media. We'll also hear from Jessica Avitabile, executive editor of Dartmouth College's newspaper The Dartmouth, and from Lizzy Weiss, editor of the student-run Middlebury College blog MiddBeat.

Also on the program, state lawmakers met Tuesday to be briefed on multi-million dollar budget shortfalls. Vermont Press Bureau chief Neal Goswami joins us to talk about the meeting, the shortfalls, and the timeline to address them.

Broadcast live on Thu., Dec. 3, 2015 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
