Suicide deaths in Vermont outnumber those caused by motor vehicle accidents and homicides. Vermont's suicide rate of 17.9 people per 100,000 is also significantly higher than the national average of 13 per 100,000.
A coalition of advocates and health care officials are working to reduce that number significantly and recently released a new platform to accomplish that.
We speak with JoEllen Tarallo-Falk, director of the Vermont Suicide Prevention Center, and Dr. Jay Batra, medical director for the Vermont Department of Mental Heath, about the strategies that are being implemented to achieve this goal.
Also on the program, Diocese of Burlington Bishop Christopher Coyne traveled with Pope Francis during his recent visit to the United States. Bishop Coyne discusses what he observed during the papal visit.
Plus, James Stewart describes the influence of Baroque composer Henry Purcell as part of the VPR Classical series "Timeline," which explores the history of Western music.
