About 270 guardians ad litem work with 2,100 children in abuse and neglect cases in Vermont.

Every child at the center of an abuse or neglect case is assigned a volunteer adult to look out for that child's interest as the case progresses. They're called guardians ad litem, and they play a crucial role in determining what family circumstances will best meet that child's needs. We look at the role these volunteers play in a child welfare system that is strained and has come under scrutiny with Dave Kennedy, the state's guardian ad litem program manager.

Are you a guardian ad litem? Tell us about your experience below or write to vermontedition@vpr.net.
