Interview: Gov. Peter Shumlin

Gov. Shumlin announcing at the Statehouse on June 8, 2015, that he would not seek reelection in 2016.

Gov. Peter Shumlin is our guest for an hour-long interview on a range of policy issues he's trying to manage, including the state's GMO labeling law, a proposed Ethics Commission and ongoing efforts to transform the state's health care system.

Some of the topics we get to in this interview:

GMO labeling law

Shumlin trumpeted Vermont's first-of-its kind measure to label food with genetically modified ingredients when he signed the law in May 2014. But now the U.S. House has passed a bill that would prohibit states from implementing their own standards for GMO labeling.

Health care

Vermont hospitals submitted their budget proposals last week, and the governor's office celebrated the low rates of revenue increase they requested. But the rate increase is higher than last year, and meanwhile the chair of the board that oversees health care spending says Vermont needs to address payment reform or face billions of dollars in extra spending.

Ethics Commission

Shumlin's office has told the Associated Press that he would support the creation of a state Ethics Commission, an idea that's been proposed by the  Secretary of State and some lawmakers. The idea has gained traction in the wake of allegations against public officials -- ranging from campaign finance improprieties to sexual assault -- that have called into question Vermont's self-image of ethical standards above reproach.

Broadcast live at noon on Mon., July 27, 2015; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
