Democracy And Capitalism Do (Not?) Work For Citizens

Rob Carr

President Barack Obama gives his Inaugural address on the West Front of the Capitol in Washington, Monday, Jan. 21, 2013.

A new book about the presidency asks the question, do democracy and capitalism really address the needs of most citizens?  On the next Vermont Edition, we talk with Saint Michael's College political science professorBill Grover about his book, The Unsustainable Presidency: Clinton, Bush, Obama and Beyond. In it, Grover and co-author Joseph Peschek argue that the modern presidency is built on maintaining economic growth and ensuring national security, and that neither goal is sustainable.

Also in the program, Bernie Sanders campaigns in Iowa. Reporter Neal Goswami with Vermont Press Bureau has just returned from Iowa, and shares his observations of Sanders' presidential campaign there.

Broadcast live on Friday, June 19, 2015, at noon; rebroadcast 7 p.m.
