Farms, Water Quality, And No Easy Answers

Agriculture Secretary Chuck Ross, left, and DEC Commissioner David Mears, speaking on Vermont Edition at the annual Vermont Farm Show.

Every winter, the Vermont Farm Show is a chance for farmers to check out new equipment and trade information about issues affecting them. One of the big topics this year: the impact of farms on the water quality of Lake Champlain.

The EPA and the Shumlin administration agree that water runoff from farms causes 40 percent of the phosphorous pollution that's degrading the water quality in Lake Champlain. The disagreement comes over what to do about it.

We take up that controversial subject with the secretary of the Agriculture Agency, Chuck Ross, and the commissioner of Environmental Conservation, David Mears, live from the Vermont Farm Show at the Champlain Valley Exposition.

Broadcast live on Tues., Jan. 27, 2015 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
