Beyond The Office: Telecommuting In Vermont

Stanley Leary
/
Associated Press
A growing number of Vermonters now work from home.

Today, employees can consult with their bosses in New York, make sales in Europe and end their day in rural Vermont. How you might ask? By commuting to work digitally. Nationally, over 3 million people can be classified as telecommuters. With a growing number moving into the state, telecommuters are bringing with them resources that can help boost our local economy.

We talk to Ben Wilson, the president of the Better Middlebury Partnership, Lisa Gosselin, Commissioner of the Department of Economic Development, and Tig Tillinghast, a resident of Thetford who has started two 'virtual' companies. And we learn how this population of workers may be able to help revitalize our rural communities.

Also on the program, we speak with Doug Racine. Yesterday, the Shumlin administration announced a change in leadership at the Agency of Human Services: Racine is out and Health Commissioner Harry Chen will take over as interim Secretary. We hear from Racine about why he was forced out and what he thinks is the right way to help the most vulnerable Vermonters.
