Macadam Mason died in June 2012 after being hit by a conducted electrical weapon (CEW) fired by a Vermont state trooper. Since then, advocates have called for a statewide policy regarding the use of stun guns by law enforcement officers.
In the 2014 session, legislators passed a law that creates statewide standards for the use of CEWs and training of all law officers who carry them.
Rick Gauthier, executive director of the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council, and ACLU of Vermont Executive Director Allen Gilbert discuss the logistics of the new law.
Also on the program, learning about different cultures and developing skills to interact with others is now one of the areas of instruction for US military and foreign service personnel. It’s also a major focus of a new academic journal that Norwich University has launched. Editor Robert Greene Sands discusses the peer-reviewed Journal of Culture, Language and International Security.
