Financial literacy is a required topic in Vermont's educational standards, but many young people still feel under-prepared for managing their own money, figuring out financial aid and saving for retirement. The State Treasurer’s Office has partnered with the Vermont Department of Libraries to declare April 5th-12th Money Smart Week and April as a whole Financial Literacy Month.
We’ll talk to John Pelletier, the director of the Center for Financial Literacy at Champlain College about what teachers need to know to ensure their students are smart about money. We’ll also hear from teachers around the state.
Also on the show, this month’s installment of Dorothy’s List, stories about the books nominated for the Dorothy Canfield Fisher children’s book award. Today VPR’s Amy Noyes takes us to Stowe Middle School, where Vermont author Rebecca Rupp is discussing her novel After Eli with a group of seventh graders.
