A Head Start, But For Fewer Children

AP/Sam Myers

Thurs 9/5/13 Noon & 7 PM  Head Start programs are best known for providing pre-school education for low-income families. But Head Start also supports children’s development, and family relationships.

Now, under the federal budget sequester, Vermont’s seven Head Start programs are cutting back on the number of children and families they serve. Thursday on Vermont Edition, we'll learn more from Paul Behrman, chair of the Vermont Head Start Association and from Linda Michniewicz, who directs Head Start and Early Head Start programs in the Northeast Kingdom, and Betsy Gunn, who coordinates Head Start programs in Bennington County.

Also in the program, New Hampshire received a federal waiver this year that exempts the state's from some requirements of the No Child Left Behind education law. Reporter Alex Hanson of the Valley News explains how that's given New Hampshire schools more flexibility in meeting performance goals.
