My Place: Specialty Records

Specialty Records was one of the premier independent record companies of the 1940's and 1950's specializing in African American popular music. In the 1940's the company released some of the most enduring seminal rhythm & blues recordings by Roy Milton, Joe Lutcher, Jimmy Liggins and others.

This week Joel Najman's My Place looks at those Specialty recordings from the pre-rock & roll era, with a biographical spotlight on Specialty Records founder Art Rupe.

Joel has been a part of Vermont's radio scene since 1964. He began his career at WIPS in Ticonderoga, New York. In 1965, he moved to WFAD in Middlebury, Vermont, where he attended Middlebury College. Over the years, Joel worked at radio stations WJOY, WQCR, WDOT, WDEV and WVAA where he served at various times as Morning Announcer, Program Director and News Director.
