In the 19th century, it was considered inappropriate to speak to anyone until you’d been introduced. How then to start a phone conversation? Alexander Graham Bell recommended “Ahoy!” or the more cumbersome “what is wanted?” Thomas Edison suggested “Hello!”
How do we negotiate the appropriate uses of our own new technologies? Can you leave your cell phone out during a work meeting? Do you text rather than leave voicemails? Where is it inappropriate to snap pictures? Are these rules hard and fast, or are digital manners constantly evolving? We’ll talk to Daniel Post Senning, author of Emily Post’s Manners in a Digital World.

Also on the program, last week the Department of Financial Regulation issued a bulletin reminding insurance companies not to exclude coverage for medically necessary treatment for transgender people. We’ll find out why that was necessary from Susan Donegan, Commissioner of the Department of Financial Regulation. She’ll also tell us about H315, legislation currently awaiting the Governor’s signature, which will require out-of-state companies that offer health coverage to the spouses of opposite-sex married couples to provide the same benefits to same-sex couples.
