Ada writes: My inspiration for this poem was a picture, one of the YWP prompts. It's a picture of a girl sitting down and leaning on her arm, her hair blowing in the wind. Beneath her, mostly covered by her shadow, is a heart drawn in the sand. The prompt had already passed by, but I decided to post this poem, which began writing itself in my mind anyway.
The Sand
by Ada Case
Grade 6, Edmunds Middle School
she etched her heart into the sand
broken love broken glass.
her life was empty
she had poured her soul into him
but he was already full and
it came spilling back up and out of
the seams
soaking into the moldy carpet
littered with bottles and cans and sand...
sand scattered by the wind and wishes
that never came true.
